Have you had a chance to use the outdoor grills at your community of apartments in Westover Hills? The outdoor kitchen is a great place to host get togethers with friends, to cook meals with your significant other. In the hopes of encouraging more residents to use our grills more often, we’ve put together a list of tips and tricks that you can use to perfect your grilling skills.

 

Even the best cooks sometimes struggle with outdoor grilling, but by following the advice below, you’ll be able to grill with confidence and maybe even offer to be the grillmaster at your next get together!

Salt the meat early

 

When you salt the meat early, you give it a chance to dissolve into the meat. As the salt pulls moisture towards it, it’ll cook right into the meat instead of simple sitting on the outside. Adding salt early will help you create a nice outside texture and full flavor throughout your piece of meat. Make sure you don’t add salt too early, however, because you’ll dry the meat out. We recommend salting the meat about a half hour before you put it on the grill.

 

Let meat rest before and after grilling

 

The goal for any griller should be to have their meat be the same temperature all the way through when they put it on the grill. If the inside is the same temperature as the outside, the outside will develop a nice crust while the inside heats up to an acceptable temperature. If the Inside is too cold when you put it on the grill, you’ll end up burning the outside just to get the middle to the right temperature.  

 

It’s equally important to let the meat rest after grilling it and before cutting it. Moisture moves towards the edge of the meat as the meat heats up, but it moves back towards the middle as it cools down. If you cut it too early, the moisture will end up on the cutting board and you’ll be left with dry meat!

 

Clean and oil the grill before you start

 

You’ll never be able to cook delicious meals if you don’t at least start with a clean grill. We would hope that other residents clean the grill when they’re done with it, but in the event that the don’t, be sure to clear the grill before you start. Once you’ve cleaned the grill, roll up a paper towel and dip it in some cooking oil. Using a pair of tongs, rub the oil-soaked paper towel on entire surface of the grill. That way, your food won’t stick and you’ll have an easier time cleaning up afterwards.
